CHAPTER 5 - MOTIVATION


How to stay motivated? 

This is a question that often lingers in the back of every individual's mind. Can we make this so called motivation stay with us for the rest of our lives?

Before we answer that, first, we need to understand - What is motivation? 

Motivation is actually a need, a desire, a want or drives that rise from internal and external sources within individuals that pushes someone to move forward to their goals.

So now, can we make it stay for the rest of our lives? The answer is, it changes. Motivation changes according to the phases of your life. Now, let's recall back, what is your motivation when you were facing PMR or PT3? Is it the same with what motivates you during SPM? How about now? 

Do you get it now? When you are sitting for different types of tests, you have different types of goals and yes, you got that right! Your motivation changes.

Still don't get it? That's okay, let's look below at the types of motivation discussed by different theorists in management perspective.


Based on the picture, there are several theories and approach that explains how different motivation drives people towards different goals.

1. Need-Based Approach

Motivation that is based on our strong desire or need towards the goal.
  • Maslow Hierarchy of Needs
This is a view of Maslow Hierarchy of Needs for society in general

  • Hertzberg's Two Factor Theory


  • The Acquired Needs Model



  • Douglas Mc'Gregor Theory X and Y


2. Expectancy Theory Model

motivation to expend effort in doing something that is determined by three basic individual perception.


3. Equity Theory

This theory indicates how individual are concentrated towards their own feeling based on how fair they are being treated and compare it with everybody else.

Motivation to strive harder can slowly vanishes when working in an organization where you are being mistreated. 

But then again, 



4. Goal-Setting Theory

A process intended to increase efficiency and effectiveness by specifying the desired outcomes toward which individuals, groups, departments, and organizations work





5. Reinforcement Theory

Application of reinforcement theory (also called behavior modification) involves changing one’s own behavior or the behavior of another




We are at the end of chapter 5. By learning and understanding all these motivational approach, it will help you to be a better worker or better yet a better manager in the future. Know what and how to motivate the employees to achieve the organizational goals. That is one of the way that would make an organization more effective and efficient!
